EPF Withdrawal Guide 2026: Every KWSP Withdrawal Type, Who Qualifies and How to Apply

Last verified: 30 October 2026. Short answer: below 55, you can take money out of KWSP in two ways. Akaun Fleksibel can be withdrawn at any time from RM50 [KWSP]. Akaun Sejahtera can only be withdrawn for set purposes such as housing, education, health or Hajj [KWSP terms]. Akaun Persaraan is locked until 55, except for incapacitation, leaving Malaysia for good, death, or savings above RM1.1 million in 2026 [KWSP]. Most applications are made in the KWSP i-Akaun app with your MyKad and a bank account in your own name.

Talreon is not an official government site. We are an independent publisher and are not affiliated with KWSP (Kumpulan Wang Simpanan Pekerja, the Employees Provident Fund). This page explains the process in our own words; the agency's own website and notices are the final word. Educational information only; not financial, tax, legal, or investment advice.

Step 1: know which of your three accounts pays

Since May 2024 every contribution made before age 55 is split across three accounts. Each one has its own withdrawal rules, so the first question is always "which account would this come from?"

AccountShare of new contributionsWhat it can be withdrawn for
Akaun Persaraan (Retirement)75%Generally only at 55, or on incapacitation, leaving Malaysia, death, or savings above the yearly threshold [KWSP]
Akaun Sejahtera (Well-being)15%Housing, education, health, Hajj, age 50, i-Lindung insurance and other listed purposes [KWSP terms]
Akaun Fleksibel (Flexible)10%Any reason, any time, minimum RM50 [KWSP]

You can see the balance of each account in KWSP i-Akaun. If you have not registered yet, follow our KWSP i-Akaun registration guide first, because almost every online withdrawal needs it.

Step 2: pick the withdrawal type that fits

The threshold for the "above RM1 million" withdrawal rises by RM100,000 a year: RM1.1 million in 2026, RM1.2 million in 2027 and RM1.3 million in 2028 [KWSP]. KWSP gives this example: with total savings of RM1.15 million in 2026, you may withdraw RM50,000.

Step 3: prepare the documents

Every application needs your MyKad (or passport for non-Malaysians) and an active savings or current account in your own name. KWSP does not pay into joint or company accounts for Akaun Fleksibel withdrawals [KWSP]. Purpose-based withdrawals need proof of the purpose:

  • Housing: sale and purchase agreement or construction agreement, and the loan offer letter if you have a loan [KWSP]
  • Education: offer letter and the fee statement or receipt [KWSP]
  • Health: medical report and bills dated within the last year [KWSP terms]
  • Leaving Malaysia: passport and proof of your status (for example, proof of renunciation or end of employment pass) [KWSP]

Step 4: apply

  1. Open the KWSP i-Akaun app (or the i-Akaun Member web portal) and log in.
  2. Choose Withdrawal, then the withdrawal type.
  3. Check the amount KWSP shows as eligible. It cannot be more than the balance of the paying account.
  4. Upload the documents asked for and enter your bank account.
  5. Approve with i-Akaun Secure or TAC, then save the reference number.
  6. Track the status in the app. If KWSP needs more documents, it will ask through the app or by letter.

Some cases must be done at a KWSP branch or self-service terminal instead, for example incapacitation, death claims, and withdrawing the entire balance in some age-based withdrawals. If the app does not show the option, book a branch visit.

Before you withdraw: the cost to your retirement

Money taken out of KWSP stops earning dividends. KWSP declared 6.15% for conventional savings for 2025 (see our EPF dividend history). As our own illustration only, RM10,000 left to grow at 5% a year would be about RM26,500 after 20 years. Try your own numbers in the compound interest calculator. Withdrawing for a home deposit or to clear high-interest debt can still make sense, but it is a trade-off, not free money.

Common mistakes

  • Using a bank account that is not in your own name. The payment will fail.
  • Applying through links received by SMS or WhatsApp. Use only the official app or kwsp.gov.my.
  • Assuming you can cancel. KWSP says an approved Akaun Fleksibel application cannot be cancelled [KWSP].
  • Expecting to touch Akaun Persaraan early. Outside the listed exceptions, it stays locked until 55.
