How this tip calculator works
Tip equals the bill you enter times the tip percentage. The total is bill plus tip, then divided evenly by the number of people. The tool does not detect tax lines, service charges or gratuity already printed on a receipt.
Important: Review the assumptions shown under each input. Changing one assumption can materially change the result.
When to use this calculator
- Split a restaurant bill evenly after adding a percentage tip.
- Compare tip rates (for example 15% vs 20%) on the same bill.
- Get a per-person amount before you pay. This is arithmetic, not etiquette advice.

Frequently asked questions
Does this tip on the pre-tax amount?
Only if you enter the pre-tax subtotal. Whatever number you type is the base.
What if the bill already includes gratuity?
Do not add another percentage unless you intend to. This tool cannot see a service-charge line.
Can people pay different amounts?
No. The split is equal. Uneven shares have to be worked out separately.
