Malaysia Road Tax (LKM) 2026: JPJ Rates by Engine cc, EV Rates and How to Renew
Last verified: 5 November 2026. Short answer: Road tax (Lesen Kenderaan Motor, LKM) depends on engine capacity, body type, ownership and region. A Peninsular private saloon car owned by an individual pays RM90 a year at 1,401 to 1,600cc and RM280 at 1,800cc [JPJ rates]. You can renew for 6 or 12 months, only within 2 months of expiry, and only with insurance covering the whole period [JPJ guide].

Every motor vehicle used on Malaysian roads needs a valid motor vehicle licence (Lesen Kenderaan Motor, LKM), usually called road tax. JPJ sets the rate and handles renewals. This guide covers the official rate tables, a few worked examples and the renewal rules JPJ publishes.
Renewal rules
JPJ's LKM renewal guide sets out these conditions [JPJ guide]:
- The renewal period is 6 months or 1 year.
- The vehicle must have valid insurance that covers the whole LKM period you are buying.
- Only an LKM that expires within the next 2 months can be renewed early.
- If the last LKM expired more than 3 years ago, the vehicle needs a PUSPAKOM inspection first (individually owned motorcycles use form PG10 instead).
- For a vehicle whose owner has died, renewal is allowed for 6 months per application, up to 5 years.
Where to renew
JPJ lists several channels. The MyJPJ app is JPJ's own digital channel and uses MyDigital ID for login [MyJPJ]. Other channels JPJ has listed include JPJ counters, post offices (Pos Malaysia), PUSPAKOM, JPJ kiosks, MySIKAP and JPJ Mobile counters. Availability of agent channels can change, so check JPJ's current notices before you choose one.
- Renew your motor insurance first so that it covers the full 6 or 12 months.
- Open MyJPJ (or go to a counter) and choose the vehicle.
- Pick 6 months or 1 year and check the amount shown.
- Pay and keep the receipt.

| 1,201 to 1,400cc | RM56 |

Motorcycles (Peninsular)
| Engine capacity | Yearly road tax |
|---|---|
| 150cc and below | Existing rate (unchanged) |
| 151 to 200cc | RM30 |

Electric vehicles
EVs are charged by rated motor power in watts rather than engine cc. JPJ's EV guideline, effective 1 April 2026, sets these rates for private cars [JPJ EV rates]:
| Rated power | Yearly road tax |
|---|---|
| Up to 50,000 W (50 kW) | RM20 |
| 50,001 to 60,000 W | RM30 |
| 60,001 to 70,000 W | RM40 |
| 70,001 to 80,000 W | RM50 |
| 80,001 to 90,000 W | RM60 |
| 90,001 to 100,000 W | RM70 |
| 100,001 to 110,000 W | RM80 |
Higher-powered EVs continue on the JPJ scale; check the full EV guideline for your car's power. Electric motorcycles of 7,500 W and below pay RM2.
Tips before you pay
- Check the engine capacity or rated power on your vehicle registration (VOC/grant) rather than the model brochure.
- Line up your insurance renewal date with your road tax so you never need a short top-up policy.
- If your road tax has lapsed for over 3 years, book PUSPAKOM first.
- Driving with expired road tax is an offence; renew before the expiry date.
