Car Loan Calculator Malaysia (Hire Purchase)
Work out the monthly instalment on a Malaysian car hire-purchase loan quoted at a flat rate, and see the effective interest rate (EIR) behind it.
How a Malaysian car loan instalment is calculated: total interest = loan × flat rate × years, and monthly instalment = (loan + total interest) ÷ months.
Example: RM80,000 at an illustrative 3.00% flat rate over 9 years: interest = RM80,000 × 3% × 9 = RM21,600, so the instalment is RM101,600 ÷ 108 = RM940.74 a month. That flat rate equals an effective rate of roughly 5.5% a year.

2026 update: under the Hire-Purchase (Amendment) Act 2026, effective 1 June 2026, fixed-rate hire purchase moves from flat rates and the Rule of 78 to the reducing balance method priced in EIR. Providers have until 31 March 2027 to switch, so flat-rate quotes may still appear until then. Banks say eligible older Rule of 78 agreements get goodwill discounts on early settlement (ABM; BNM consumer guide, checked 19 October 2026). This calculator converts any flat quote to its EIR so you can compare. See flat rate vs EIR in Malaysia.

How car hire-purchase interest works in Malaysia
Many conventional car loans in Malaysia are hire-purchase agreements quoted at a flat rate. Interest is worked out once on the original amount financed for the whole tenure, added to the loan, and the total is split into equal monthly instalments. Because you pay interest on the full original amount even as the balance falls, the effective rate is noticeably higher than the flat rate. Islamic car financing (commonly structured as AITAB, Al-Ijarah Thumma Al-Bai) uses a profit rate rather than interest, but the instalment is often worked out the same way. Ask the bank which method applies.
Monthly instalment = (loan amount + total interest) ÷ number of months
Worked example: RM80,000 at 3% flat for 9 years
Suppose you finance RM80,000 at a 3.00% flat rate over 9 years (108 months). Total interest is RM80,000 × 3% × 9 = RM21,600, so you repay RM101,600 in total and the instalment is RM101,600 ÷ 108 = RM940.74 a month. Converted to a reducing-balance basis, that flat rate is equivalent to an effective rate of roughly 5.5% a year, as the calculator shows. The 3.00% figure is an example only, not a current bank rate.
Before you sign
- Compare offers using the effective rate, not the flat rate alone. Two loans with the same flat rate but different tenures have different effective rates.
- A longer tenure lowers the instalment but raises total interest, because flat interest grows with every year added.
- Ask how an early settlement rebate is calculated, and whether insurance, processing or stamp duty charges are added to the amount financed.
- Check affordability against your other commitments with the debt-to-income calculator.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Malaysian car loan flat rate the same as the interest rate on a home loan?
No. A home loan usually charges interest on the reducing balance, while a hire-purchase flat rate charges interest on the original amount for the whole tenure. Convert the flat rate to an effective rate to compare them.
Why is the effective rate higher than the flat rate?
Because flat interest is charged on the full amount financed every year, even though you repay part of the principal each month. On a reducing-balance basis the same instalment implies a higher rate.
Does this include insurance or road tax?
No. It covers the loan instalment only. Add insurance, road tax, maintenance and any charges financed into the loan separately.
Is the 3% rate in the example current?
No. It is an illustration. Use the flat rate in your own quotation from the bank.
How do I calculate my car loan monthly instalment in Malaysia?
Multiply the loan by the flat rate and the number of years to get total interest, add it to the loan, then divide by the number of months. RM80,000 at 3% flat over 9 years is RM940.74 a month.
