CPF Cash Top-Up Tax Relief 2026: Up to S$16,000, Who Counts as Family and How It Works

Last verified: 31 October 2026. Short answer: a Singapore Citizen or PR who makes cash top-ups under the CPF Retirement Sum Topping-Up Scheme (RSTU) gets tax relief of up to S$8,000 for top-ups to themselves and another S$8,000 for top-ups to family members each calendar year [IRAS] [CPF]. Relief only counts up to the recipient's Full Retirement Sum (S$220,400 for top-ups in 2026) [IRAS]. Top-ups are irreversible, and relief is given automatically in the following year's assessment [CPF] [IRAS].

What does not qualify

  • Transfers from your own CPF savings (CPF transfers) do not get tax relief [IRAS] [CPF].
  • Top-ups that attract the Matched Retirement Savings Scheme grant (from 1 January 2025) or the Matched MediSave Scheme grant (from 1 January 2026) do not get relief [IRAS].
  • Any amount above the recipient's Full Retirement Sum; members 55 and over can still top up to the Enhanced Retirement Sum (S$440,800 in 2026) for higher payouts, but without relief on the excess [IRAS] [CPF].

How to make a top-up

  1. Check your own and your family member's top-up limit and eligible relief on the CPF Retirement Dashboard [CPF].
  2. Make the cash top-up online through CPF, or set up recurring top-ups by GIRO; CPF also has a PayNow guide [CPF].
  3. Make sure CPF receives your application by 31 December for relief in the next Year of Assessment [IRAS].
  4. You do not need to claim: IRAS grants the relief automatically from CPF's records [IRAS].

Think before you top up

Top-ups cannot be withdrawn for other purposes and are reserved for monthly retirement payouts [CPF]. IRAS also says there is no refund for accepted top-ups, so check that you are not already near the S$80,000 relief cap [IRAS]. CPF notes that topping up in January rather than December earns more interest over time [CPF]. See our income tax rates to estimate what the relief is worth to you.
