What the OPR is

The OPR is the interest rate Bank Negara Malaysia sets to steer the cost of money between banks. Banks use it as a reference when they set their own lending and deposit rates, so a change usually flows through to floating-rate loans and to fixed deposit rates over the following weeks.

What a change can mean for your home loan (our own arithmetic)

On a RM400,000, 30-year floating-rate loan at 4.00%, the monthly instalment is about RM1,910. If your bank passed on a 0.25 point cut in full (3.75%), it would fall to about RM1,852, roughly RM57 a month less. Your bank decides how much of any change it passes on and when, so check your loan letter and your bank's notice.

Try your own numbers in the Malaysia home loan calculator, or see the flat rate vs effective rate guide for car and personal loans, which are usually fixed.

How to follow the next decision

  1. BNM's Monetary Policy Committee meets several times a year; the dates and each statement are on its OPR decisions page.
  2. After a change, watch for your bank's notice of its new base rate, and check your next statement.
  3. If you have a fixed-rate loan, an OPR change does not alter your instalment.
