How to renew a Malaysian passport
1. Check whether online renewal is available to you
MyOnline Passport is for renewal of an existing Malaysian international passport. The official terms currently exclude several categories from online application, including persons with disabilities (OKU), children aged 13 and below, students continuing an overseas bachelor’s degree and Hajj pilgrims. The existing passport must be in your possession and in good condition. Malaysians abroad without valid immigration status or a long-term pass are also excluded from online renewal under the portal terms.
Eligibility and online options can change. Read the current terms on the official service before starting: MyOnline Passport (Immigration Department).
2. Prepare a photo that meets the live requirements
The official portal currently specifies a recent face photo with a plain white background and no shadow, dark clothing covering the shoulders and chest, and a clear unobstructed face. Glasses, contact lenses and face/head accessories are not permitted in the submitted image. It warns that AI-generated or altered photographs can lead to rejection. Follow the portal’s live photo examples rather than relying on a third-party editor or old checklist.
3. Complete the application and pay through the official portal
- Open the official portal directly from the Immigration Department website if you are unsure a link is genuine.
- Enter the applicant details exactly as shown on identity documents and the current passport.
- Upload a photo matching the instructions shown in the portal.
- Review the selected collection office and the fee displayed for your category before payment.
- Save the receipt and application reference so you can check the application status in the official service.
The online system accepts the payment methods shown in its current flow. Do not send passport numbers, identity-card numbers or payment details to Talreon.
4. Collect the passport from the selected office
The portal says applicants aged 18 and above should attend collection with MyKad, the current passport and the payment receipt. Applicants below 18 should attend with a parent or legal guardian and bring the applicant and guardian documents specified in the portal. Check the current office opening hours, holidays and collection instructions before travelling.
Use the state office directory to locate the official office page, then verify its service type and current hours with Immigration.
Passport fees and processing times
The Immigration Department publishes a passport fee schedule with different categories and validity terms. The standard published rates include RM200 for applicants aged 18–59 for five years, and RM350 for ten years; applicants aged 60 and above are listed at RM100 for five years or RM175 for ten years. Children and special categories have different rules. The amount shown in the application or counter service is the one to confirm before payment.
The Immigration Department’s customer charter gives normal processing targets for passport services but excludes incomplete, complex or referred applications. Do not book non-refundable travel based only on a stated processing target.
If your passport is lost or damaged
Do not use the standard online renewal flow if the passport is lost or damaged. The Immigration Department’s replacement procedure requires an office application and supporting documents; a police report is requested for loss, fire or natural-disaster cases. If the loss occurs abroad, contact the nearest Malaysian diplomatic mission promptly and follow its instructions for emergency travel documents or replacement.
Before travelling
- Check your passport validity against the destination’s official entry rules; many destinations require six months or more, but requirements differ.
- Confirm visas, electronic travel authorizations, transit permissions and permitted stay with the destination government or its embassy.
- Review the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ latest travel advisories.
- Check whether a Malaysian travel restriction could affect departure.
- Keep digital and separate physical copies of key documents and emergency contacts.
